Nikia - Avlaki

Duration
139 minutes
Distance (km)
5.79 km

The route starts from Nikiá and initially crosses the southern rim of the caldera. In the first part of the trail, which starts from the western edge of the village, next to the cemetery, the old cobblestone is wonderfully preserved, and you encounter characteristic “cave houses” built with “sugar stone” (perlitic lava of Nikiá). A small southern branch leads to the top of the Red Mill (site 6.1), where a windmill is preserved. The elevation where the Red Mill is located consists of the argillites of Argos covered by layers of ash-red scoria from the Kyra eruptions, as well as layers of pumice from the first catastrophic eruption.

The main path passes along the inner side of the caldera rim and offers a unique view of the hydrothermal craters, the lava neck, and the uplift structures of the Argos lavas (site 6.2). It then descends as the Kailia path and connects with the road leading to Lakki, or Mandraki via the western slopes of the volcano. Return to Nikiá and take the path leading to Avláki, the southern bay of Nisyros, which formerly hosted a settlement with several families and thermal baths. In the first section, you encounter ruins from old churches.

After the short section coinciding with the paved road, the path again moves over the lavas of Nikiá and ends at the Monastery of St. Panteleimon, above Avláki. Approaching Avláki, it passes quite close to an anthropogenic mound, the Koumouli (site 6.3). It is not yet known if this is an ancient tholos tomb or tumulus, or simply a desite area of waste from quarrying and production of mill stones. In the Avláki bay (site 6.4 new site), detect in the shallow sea, in front of the last house of the abandoned village, the warm waters of the thermal spring. Observe the beautiful layers of black scoria which turn red at the top and the imposing andesitic lava flow forming the Avláki cape. Rest in the cool courtyard of the Monastery of St.Panteleimon and take the return road.
