NATIONAL GEOLOGICAl MUSEUM OF GREECE
The National Geological Museum of Greece is the first coordinated effort by the Greek state to promote the Geological Cultural Heritage of Greece. The Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (H.S.G.M.E.) established the Museum in 2021, in place of the former Museum of Minerals and Rocks, which, after extensive renovation, now operates in a specially designed space within the Central Facilities of the Survey, which also oversees its curation and management.
Its purpose is to promote the protection and showcase the geological wealth of Greece and the role it played in the history and development of the ancient world, as well as in the modern and contemporary history of Hellenism, highlighting its historical and scientific significance worldwide.
Through its collections, the Museum caters to both a broad audience and specialized scientific communities, showcasing important geological specimens from Greece (minerals, fossils, rocks, etc.), while also serving as a source of knowledge and research for the country's geological wealth.
In its halls, the Museum presents the long evolution of geological research, the importance of geological resources, and the geological cultural heritage of Greece. Furthermore, its collections from the Greek region are among the richest in the world, establishing it as the "Treasury" of Greece’s geology.
Through the applications "Virtual Tour" and "Virtual Museum," you can remotely visit the Museum, view its exhibits and collections, and learn about the Museum's history.
