The route moves along the eastern slopes of the caldera, starting from Nikiá and ending at Phylakio, or vice versa. The intermediate section of the trail is not well maintained and is not marked at all. If you prefer not to explore or move off the trail, you can only do the first section ofthe trail near Phylakio and then walk from Nikiá to Parletia.
The geological structures here are of particular interest, including the lava flow and uplift structures of Nikiá (site 5.1), which dominate the Nikiá – Parletia route, and the large andesiti clava flows that form the steep slopes near Phylakio (site 5.2). At the beginning of the Nikiá -Parletia route, there is the Monastery of St. John the Theologian (site 5.3), with a very interesting bell tower made of carved lava. The Parletia elevation is a lava neck from the Nikiálavas (site 5.4). Here was one of the five medieval castles of Nisyros, and some ruins and cisterns still remain.
In Nikiá, you can visit the Nisyros Volcanological Museum (site 5.5), whichis housed in the restored Municipal School of the settlement. The small cafes in the wonderful and unique square of Nikiá will offer rest and delight, and a stroll through the narrow streets ofthe village will reveal its very interesting architecture. The old path connecting Nikiá with Lakki, crossing the entire eastern slope of the caldera, is also interesting. It has recently been restored in most parts, and it is a pleasure to traverse, walking on the old stone construction.
