Evangelistra - Emporio

Duration
82 minutes
Distance (km)
3.18 km

This path starts from the Evangelistria Monastery (Evangelistra according to the Nisyrians) and moves along the northern rim of the caldera. At the start, the geological formations on the NW (Site 9.1) and northern slopes of the caldera (Site 9.2) are of interest. The sequence of andesitic lava flows with horizons of ash and red scoria vividly illustrates the structure of a classic stratovolcano. At the base of the caldera's slopes, a small lowland area, Kato Lakki or Kato Lakki, remains uncovered by the post-caldera domes from the northern part of the caldera floor.

Next, you will encounter the impressive aeolian erosion forms of the dacitic lavas of the Akimaronas dome (Site 9.3).The path ends in Emporio, where it is worth exploring for its unique architecture, the remains ofthe Medieval castle (Pantoniiki), and the churches of Taxiarches and the Transfiguration of the Savior. From the courtyard of the Volcanological Observatory, housed in the restored old village school (Site 9.4), you can observe another dacitic lava neck on the northern slopes of the caldera (Site 9.5). The rugged cliffs host eagle nests, known in Nisyros as "vitziles".
