The geotrail starts from an area with great tourist and scientific value, the Mavra Volia beach of Emporios. The site has given its name to a very important geological phenomenon – known as the “Emporios anomaly” – related to modern earth processes, in environments of lithospheric plate convergence and great depths. Thus, starting from a particular volcanic landscape, the route continues through an area that, in geological time, was once a lake, to end in a typical karst field with underground, impressive landforms and the cave of Olympoi. Contrasts are many, while the cultivation of mastic and the medieval settlements, scattered throughout the extent of the geotrail, act as a connecting link.
