Circumnavigation of Nisyros

Duration
82 minutes
Distance (km)
26.6 km

Starting from Mandraki and heading south, first appear the pillows of the submarine lava flows (Site 10.1) and then the terrestrial lava flows that cover them (Site 10.2). These are the oldest volcanic rocks of the island now exposed above the sea. At Cape Kanoni, impressive lava prisms are visible due to the columnar jointing of the old andesites (Site 10.3). After the Heart Valley, where the oldest ash layers of Nisyros are visible, the realm of Karavoti begins. Thick dacite flows, which originate from the unique post-caldera dome developed outside the caldera, create rugged coasts and unique natural sculptures from the erosion of air and sea on the lava (Site 10.4). If time, weather, and your guide's knowledge permit, a visit to the Dragon’s Cave (Site 10.5) is interesting with not very difficult climbing on the steep coast.

From the White Cove to Agia Irini, a layer of red scoria from the latest eruptions of Kyra steals the show, crowning the beach (Site 10.6). At the base of the coasts, the Argos lavas erode into spectacular columns known as “Frangko’s Routsouna.” In the cove of Agia Irini, the skeleton of the sulfur processing plant built in 1879 dominates (Site 10.7). From there to Avlaki, the fronts of the thick rhyolitic lava flows of Argos prevail (Site 10.8). In the settlement, spectacular sequences of andesitic lava flows and black-red scoria are also visible.

After Avlaki, you enter the realm of the Nikia lavas. Spectacularly thick flows with visible folding of the successive layers of viscous magma (Site 10.9). After the Pachia Ammos beach and the ash layers of Kyra, the first major eruptions of Nisyros (Site 10.10), the coast becomes smooth. The geological sections and the artistic approach to viewing the coasts of the Katsouni area (Site 10.11) are also unique. Here, the newer andesitic lava flows are crowned by the ash of the major destructive eruptions.

On your return to Mandraki, you will see the imposing building of the Pantelidis Thermal Baths (Site 10.12), at the eastern edge of the picturesque settlement of Palli, as well as the facilities of the Municipal Thermal Baths (Site 10.13), in Thermia, just before the port of Mandraki.
